Nairobi Speaker Benson Mutura Dismisses DCI Summons, Cites Witch-Hunt
Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura has dismissed summons by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
He has dismissed the summons as mere political witch-hunt following his decision to work with Deputy President William Ruto.
He was summoned by the DCI to answer to accusations of alleged stealing by servant.
He was scheduled to appear at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu road at exactly 2pm.
The speaker however told journalists that the summon letter was issued to him very late and that he will only honor them when summoned appropriately.
This is after an early morning attempt to arrest him was thwarted by his lawyers who accused the DCI sleuths of contravening the Powers and Privileges Act that protects speakers and legislators from being arrested within the assembly.
The DCI office says it convinced that the speaker can help with relevant information in regard to the alleged theft of funds.
” I Felix Karisaa Police Officer attached to DCI Serious Crime Unit, I am investigating into an alleged stealing by servant,” the letter reads.
The summon letter does not indicate any amount stolen or being investigated in effect to the summons.
On his part, Mutura has linked the summons to political witch-hunt, claiming that he is being fought after he decamped from the ruling Jubilee party to Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance ( UDA).
” All this is because of politics after l decided to work with the Deputy President and l want to assure you that l will not be intimidated,”
Mutura also linked his emerging woes to his position against the extension of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services ( NMS) tenure by 9 more months from March this year.
