Journalists Need Help in Analyzing Audit Reports- Nairobi Clerk Edward Gichana
There is need to enlighten journalists on how to properly analyse audit reports for factual and objective reporting.
Nairobi City County Assembly clerk Edward Gichana on Friday challenged stakeholders in media and governance institutions to hold more special workshops that will help sharpen media reporting on financial matters.
Gichana said that there is notable confusion in the industry on the use of audit terminologies which often ends up misleading the public.
“When you talk of misappropriation of funds its totally different from failure to account for funds by relevant departments,”
Gichana said that the media has mainly focused on sensationalizing audit reports instead of detailing the real report as captured by the auditor.
“Sometimes you read a story in the newspaper and when you go through the real audit report, you find that everything is different,” Gichana said.
Gichana was speaking in Naivasha during a media workshop on County Assembly reporting and progress of devolution.
Nairobi City County Assembly Deputy Clerk Pauline Akuku said that there is need for the 47 county assemblies to foster good working relationships with journalists and the media in general.
