Former Football Kenya Federation [FKF] league champs Gor Mahia were beaten by coast-based premier league team Bandari Football Club 2-1 in a friendly match played at Kenya Ports Authority [KPA] Mbaraki sports club in Mvita constituency, Mombasa county.
The home team came from behind to edge former champs 2-1 during the well-attended entertaining match.
The former champs were first to score through a penalty kick taken by Peter Lwasa after sending the home team custodian Wanyika Mike diving the wrong side of the net in the first half with Gor leading.
The home team mounted pressure during the second half of the match and equalized through Abdullah Hassim from a free kick during a melee.
Both teams mounted pressure with the midfield dictating the match which would have gone either side.
The Green Army fielded familiar faces in both first and second half with team captain George Odhiambo and Ernest Wendo taking control of the players in the pitch.
Hosts striker Abdullah was in the score chart of the day when he scored the second goal from a penalty shootout sending Gor’s custodian Dolph Owino diving the wrong side of the net.
Head coach of the former champs, Jonathan McKinstry said despite losing the day’s friendly they were the best team in ball possession compared to the home team.
He told journalists he was aware the home team is tough and his team lacked a striking force during the day’s match.
“I promise to be more clinical ahead of the season’s kick off of the premier league,” he pointed out.
