Sifuna hits out at Sakaja for frustrating Swearing in of Nairobi MCAs
The stalemate in gazettement of Nairobi MCA’s by Governor Johnson Sakaja has continued to draw reactions from various in the city who are reading malice in the move.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has Waded in on the matter saying Azimio-One Kenya is the Majority in the Assembly and the delay which he has termed as political, will not change anything.
The ODM secretary general hinted that the delay is a deliberate attempt by the Kenya Kwanza Team to court rival MCAs on their side.
He stated that no matter how long it will take, they will remain the majority.
He has accused the governor of delaying showing their numbers which he said they do not have.
“He is playing games because he wants to see if they can show their numbers. It doesn’t matter how long it will take but Azimio has the Majority at the County Assembly,” Sifuna stated.
Last week, Former Minority leader and Kilimani Member of County Assembly Moses Ogeto raised questions on why Nairobi Governor was not amongst the majority who had gazetted the swearing-in for this week.
According to Ogeto, the failure was related to the election of the next speaker of the Assembly and he said it is delaying them from beginning their oversight role.
“We understand that the Kenya Kwanza team is trying to lobby MCAs for the election of the speaker. The nominated MCA’s were gazetted, but he is yet to gazette the first sitting,” Ogeto said.
” Nairobi is not an exemption of not having their first sitting and we begin our work. He should do it not later than this week,” he added.
Last week Monday the Electrol body IEBC gazetted all the nominated members of CountyAssemblies across the 47 counties which prompted the governors to gazette the first sitting with Machakos having theirs today and a majority conducting it on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
The standing orders of the Nairobi County Assembly state that during the first sitting after the legislatures have taken the oath, they are supposed to elect a speaker thereafter.
The position of the speaker has attracted several candidates including ODM’s Ken Ngondi, Former Gender and Public Service CAS Rachael Shebesh, the incumbent Benson Mutura under UDA, and Jubilee’s Harrison Wangoro.
