Swearing in of Nairobi MCAs Slated for Thursday
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has finally gazetted the first sitting of the County Assembly after weeks of Stalemate that sparked uproar from a section of MCAs.
The Members of the County Assembly will finally be sworn in on Thursday, September 29, 2022 according to a notice seen by The Times Digital.
“Notice is given to the general public and all elected and nominated Members of the County Assembly of Nairobi city that pursuant to Section 7(b) of the County Governments Amendment Act 2020 and standing order 4(1) of Nairobi City county Assembly orders, I Sakaja Aurthur Johnson Governor of the County Government of Nairobi appoint that the first sitting of the third Assembly shall be held at the assembly Chambers on Thursday 29, September 2022at 9:00 am,” the Gazette notice stated.
Last week, former Minority Leader and Kilimani Member of County Assembly Moses Ogeto raised questions on why Nairobi Governor was not amongst the majority who had gazetted the swearing-in for this week.
“We understand that the Kenya Kwanza team is trying to lobby MCAs for the election of the speaker. The nominated MCA’s were gazetted, but he is yet to gazette the first sitting,” Ogeto said.
“Nairobi is not an exemption of not having their first sitting and we begin our work. He should do it not later than this week,” he added.
The standing orders of the Nairobi County Assembly state that during the first sitting, after the legislators have taken the oath, they are supposed to elect a speaker thereafter.
The position of the speaker has attracted several candidates including ODM’s Ken Ngondi, former Gender and Public Service CAS Rachael Shebesh, the incumbent Benson Mutura, and Jubilee’s Harrison Wangoro.
