Knight Scrap Iron and Steel Dealers Association Warn Crooks
By John Kariuki
The Knight Scrap Iron and Steel Dealers Association has issued a stern warning to the crooks who are out there to tarnish the good image of the lucrative industry.
Of late the scrap metal industry has been marred with allegations of being linked to vandalism of road and rail infrastructure, a move that led to a temporary ban in May.
The Times Digital in a bid to clear the air sought to hear from the Secretary General of the Knight Scrap iron and steel dealers association Mrs Gladys Nyambura.
“Its undoubted that this industry is among the greatest contributor to the economy of this country. If you look at almost every sector, it deals with metal in one way or the other. However, it has not been a walk in the park for us who have been fending for ourselves in this metal job. Firstly, we are overburdened with heavy taxation at almost every stage. In fact, no other sector is as overtaxed as the scrap metal.”
Nyambura however added that they don’t have a problem paying the said taxes as long as the Government will give them a conducive working environment and avoid blanket condemnation.
“No market lacks a mad man..so even in this industry we are alive to the fact that we have crooks who have been stealing infrastructure metal. This is therefore to issue a stern warning to them that should their stolen merchandise be intercepted we shall not only disown you but we shall also apprehend you and hand you over to the relevant authorities for action,” Nyambura warned.
Nyambura at the same time also welcomed the newly appointed Trade Minister Moses Kuria saying they are looking forward to a closer working relationship to lift the industry to then next level.
Gladys also believes in diversification and as such she has recently opened the Glad Trash Salon and Barber shop.
