Co-op Bank of Kenya pays for patients detained in hospitals over bills

Co-op Bank of Kenya has given out a one million shillings cheque in support of patients who had been detained at county hospitals over a medical bill.

The cheque was handed to Nairobi governor Johnstone Sakaja.

“Christmas is a time when families need to be together. So let the detained patients be released so that they can go and celebrate Christmas with their families,” Sakaja said

Immediately after receiving the cheque, Sakaja hailed the gesture noting that those detailed over the medical bill will now be released to go home to spend Christmas with their families.

“Very grateful to The Co-operative Bank for their kind gesture and donation of one million shillings to support my initiative where all who had been detained at our county hospitals were released to go home to spend Christmas with their families. May God bless you so much, “he said

He said that the Cooperative bank donation will be handed to Mbagathi District hospital where the total outstanding bills had come to 1.7 million.

The co-operative bank has been helping society through a corporate social responsibility program.

Recently, Co-operative Bank contributed Sh150 million in drought donation funds.

The bank CEO Gideon Muriuki handed the cheque to President William Ruto at State house Nairobi and was accompanied by his deputy Rigathi Gachagua.

Co-op Bank recently said it will leverage its relationships in the cooperative movement to support the rollout of the State’s Sh50 billion hustler fund, which will offer soft loans to small enterprises.

Mr. Muriuki said that Co-op bank is ready to provide SACCOs with its lending models to help the thrift institutions manage credit risk better.

The lender has integrated technology linking it with SACCOs and their members including its mobile banking platform MCo-op Cash.

It has also been supporting capacity building in the SACCO sector for over a decade through an in-house team of advisors. Saccos have over 13 million members, representing people engaged in diverse economic activities including formal employment and ventures in farming, retail, and public transport.
