With the alarming rate of youth indulgence in illicit brew, drug and substance abuse across the country, Mt. Elgon has been on the forefront to protect it’s population.
Speaking with The Times Newspaper, Mt. Elgon Sub county area OCPD James Mugo has confirmed that efforts to combat this behaviour and trend especially among the youth and young adults has bore fruit overtime.
“I can candidly say that there has been a 70% success rate so far in this fight across the region, thanks to the tremendous support we get from the community and law courts where culprits have been charged with heavy fines once found guilty,” revealed Mr. Mugo.
He further divulged that over 150 persons in possession of substandard brews and illegal drugs have recently been charged and stern action taken against them accordingly.
“I assure Mt. Elgon residents that these illegal business is soon going to be non- existent because of the legal action that have been taken to culprits including but not limited to serving in jail,” he reiterated.
On the other hand Mr. Mugo revealed that they have been working closely with both primary and secondary schools; where they’ve been holding seminars and advising children and young adults to keep off drugs and substance abuse.
“So far I gladly commend pupils and students for their obedience and cooperation towards these seminars, none of them has been reported in our police station for the past 2 months with related crimes,” Mr. Mugo proudly commented.
The area OCPD conclusively urged the youth, parents and community at large to be vigilant regarding such matters and report any suspects for further investigations.
