Residents of Tana River County are calling on the National Assembly Committee on Lands to help them obtain their title deeds.

In a meeting chaired by Hon. Joash Nyamoko, Members of the Committee on Lands heard the appeals of Tana River residents led by Garsen Constituency MP, Hon. Ali Wario.

During the meeting, community leaders from various ranches and community-based groups in Tana River County shared their struggles with lawmakers. They raised issues on encroachment of land, illegal settlement of squatters, delays in acquiring titles, and a lack of proper land subdivision.

The Chair of the Committee, Hon. Joash Nyamoko, acknowledged that land is a particularly contentious issue, and promised to find workable solutions.
“This move is a positive step towards resolving the long-standing issue of land ownership in Tana River County, and it is hoped that the government will take the necessary steps to expedite the process and address the concerns of the residents,” Hon. Nyamoko.

The Hon. Nixon Korir, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Lands, and Mr. Gerrison Omanwa, Chairperson of the National Lands Commission, also committed to expediting the processing of title deeds in the affected areas of the county.

Residents were urged to engage licensed surveyors to avoid falling prey to land fraudsters. The Tana River MP was lauded for inviting residents to air their grievances before the Committee, the Ministry, and the National Land Commission.

The Committee is expected to engage with Tana River community leaders, the Ministry of Land, and the National Land Commission on the issuance of title deeds and resolving historical land injustices.
