The Council for Persons Living with Disabilities Lauds Gov’t for Inclusivity

The National Council for Persons Living with Disabilities Kenya (NCPWD) has lauded President William Ruto and his government for inclusion of the abled differently in participation and representation in key sectors of his reign.

During the 1st National Disability Dialogue unveiled by NCPWD in partnership with the Christian Blind Mission (CBM) to provide space for discussions on progress in disability inclusion, it was noted that there was increased representation in government, employment and education sectors.

In the dialogue that sought to provide stakeholders with the opportunity to reflect on the level of achievements of the commitments made, the NCPWD and the CBM lobbied for more opportunities.

The Executive Director of the National Council for Persons Living with Disabilities Harun Hassan noted that there has been a progress since co-hosting the first Global Disability Summit in 2018 with the United Kingdom.

“Kenya is indeed on course through the use of the Washington Group Short Questions in the 2019 Population Census and the role out of the Council’s new registration system that generates real-time socio-economic data of registered persons living with disabilities down to the ward levels in counties,” Hussein stated.

He called on stakeholders to dive into thematic areas while making proposals aligned with government on providing social inclusion interventions through breaking barriers, reducing inequalities and building synergies.

The CBM Director David Munyendo stated that the dialogue reaffirms complete realization of human rights of PWDs.

“It’s expected that this commitment shall translate to increasing knowledge and tools for enhancing inclusive theory and practical policies improving access to information, employment, education, assistive technology and services,” he said.
