LSK Launches Crackdown on Quacks
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is undertaking a thorough crackdown on lawyers operating in the country without practising certificates, thereby tarnishing the repute of the profession.
Through the Society’s President Eric Theuri, the nationwide crackdown on “quacks” is aimed at weeding out the charlatans masquerading as “learned fellows”
Mr Theuri said they are rolling out the operation in tandem with the National Police Service and the Office of The Director of Public Prosecutions.
“We’ve received several complaints from members of the public by people masquerading as advocates. This is a campaign that will be carried out countrywide,” Theuri noted.
“We are working closely with the National Police Service and DPP to ensure proper action is carried out against them.”
In furtherance to that the society said it has already sent a warning letter to some renown lawyers.
“We have done a letter to some notable lawyers for practising without a practising certificate. Some of them have been appearing in court without a practising certificate,” Theuri said.
He added: “We urge our trained colleagues to desist from practising until they’ve attained a practising certificate. If they do, we will object to their admission to the bar when the time comes.”
