Kenya Seeking Partnerships on Nuclear Energy
Kenya is committed to ensure the implementation of a nuclear power program in the country.
State Department for Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira said the government has demonstrated this through the establishment of robust partnerships internationally.
He said after the 2022 general elections when Kenya Kwanza formed the government the country signed a Nuclear Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding with the United States of America.
“The agreement provides for collaboration in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy,” he pointed out.
Wachira added the agreement aims at fostering a deeper relationship between the nuclear industries of the two countries and to pursue cooperation in non-power applications of nuclear energy.
He made the remarks during the opening of the interregional training course on nuclear power infrastructures development held at Nyali beach hotel in Mombasa county.
The PS told the delegates drawn from countries as diverse as Algeria, Egypt, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana and Ethiopia in Africa; Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Mongolia and Thailand in Asia; Turkey and Jordan in the Middle East, as well as European countries including representation in the form of Poland that the government is looking forward to a robust engagement that is mutually beneficial towards the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding.
He acknowledged that the world is faced with the challenges of climate change, population growth, and energy security.
“It is imperative that we explore diverse and sustainable sources of energy. Nuclear energy is an indispensable tool for achieving the global sustainable development agenda,” he added.
The PS pointed out that nuclear power has long stood as a beacon of promise with regard to offering clean, reliable, and continuous energy generation.
He said it has not only a key role to play in decarbonizing the energy sector but also supports the attainment of all the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Successful implementation of the nuclear power program will provide numerous benefits to various sectors of Kenya’s economy,” he added.
