Dishi na county Receives Ksh160 Million Boost from France
The French government has pledged a substantial contribution of €1 million, equivalent to Ksh160 million, in support of Nairobi City County’s school feeding initiative known as “Dishi na County.” This generous donation is earmarked to facilitate the provision of meals for students in need.
Dr. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, the French Minister of State for Development, made this significant pledge during her visit to Olympic Primary School in Kibra Constituency. During her visit, she collaborated with Nairobi City Governor H.E Hon. Sakaja Johnson in the noble endeavor of providing meals to underprivileged children.
The financial support from France will play a pivotal role in ensuring that all children attending Public Primary Schools and Early Childhood Development Centers (ECDs) have access to nourishing and wholesome hot meals through the collaborative efforts of the program’s partner, Food for Education.
Currently, 46 public primary schools in Nairobi County are benefiting from the recently launched school feeding program, aptly named Dishi na County.
Governor Johnson Sakaja has outlined that the program will be implemented in three phases, with phase one set to benefit a total of 81,208 students through subsidized food. Dr. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou emphasized the French Government’s participation in the Dishi na County project, with the goal of ensuring that school children, especially those in informal settlements, receive regular meals.
This initiative is vital as many of these children currently lack access to adequate nutrition, leading to cases of underweight and stunted growth.
The food for the program will be sourced from local farmers and prepared daily in a “giga kitchen,” which will produce up to 60,000 meals per day in ten kitchens located throughout the county.
