Rotary District 9212 Governor Eng Leonard Ithau Visits Kikopey Health and Water Project, Oversees Polio Vaccination

Rotary District 9212 Governor Engineer Leonard Ithau on Tuesday 24th October 2023 made a special visit to Kikopey Health, Water and Sanitation Project e toured the facility that was initiated by the Rotary Club of Hurlingham, where he also oversaw the Polio Vaccination to tens of kids who graced the ceremony.
Addressing attendees during the visit, Engineer Ithau urged Rotarians drawn from the District to borrow a leaf from what the Rotary Club of Hurlingham has done at Kikopey Dispensary through the project by ensuring that they start such projects in their various backyards.
Thanking the Rotary Club of Hurlingham for the good job it has done at Kikopey Dispensary, Engineer Ithau however challenged the Club to continue doing more at the project, owing to the fact that much still needed to be done to ensure that the project located at Gilgil sub-county in Nakuru County is up to the required standards.
‘This project was initiated in 2013. When I look around, all these kids that are here were not yet born. We don’t want to be here in ten years time and get the same situation. Things have changed and today’s needs are different. We need to have a laboratory and a good Maternity wing to for the mothers here,’ he asked to which the Rotarians said they will do.
Rotary Clubs of Ngong Road, Milimani, Nairobi East, Nairobi South, Hurlingam and Parklands were in attendance.
‘Things are not static. What was happening in 2013 is not what us happening now. Today’s needs are different. Do more as Rotarians,’ he further advised.
His remarks were echoed by Facility in Charge Kikopey Dispensary Dr Meshack Wanjohi who said the facility still needed lots of work to be what it desired to be.
‘We thank you Rotarians for the immense work you have done so far to get us to where we are today. However, we lack computers, weighing machines, a spacious Pharmacy, a power back up, a laboratory and a spacious working environment,’ Dr Wanjohi outlined.
The Nakuru County Health Services Director Dr Daniel Wainaina assured Dr Wanjohi that the County Government of Nakuru is working towards ensuring that the Kikopey Facility is upgraded to the required standards as it serves more than 20 thousand patients a year.
‘This is the third facility around here that caters for the health needs of thousands of patients in a year. The County government is working to ensure that it is upgraded to cater for more. Matters space, we will utilize the skies and put up storey structures here,’ Dr Wainaina promised.
Area MCA Madam Rose Njoroge who graced the event also hailed Rotary Club of Hurlingham for the project and pledged her support.
The Rotary Club of Hurlingham highlights that in the next phase, following increase in population, it is looking forward to construct and equip a laboratory at the facility, add more sanitation facilities, restore power back-up solutions and expand the existing Pharmacy.
