Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatiany joined Bungoma CECM for Sports, Youth, and Gender Eng. Agnes Naliaka on Friday to inspect the construction of a high-altitude training center in Chemoge, Mt. Elgon.

The training center, which has been earmarked for transformation and upgrading into a satellite camp under the Kenya Academy of Sports, is at last on the verge of completion after a very long wait amongst athletes and area residents.

Speaking at the facility, Eng. Naliaka challenged the constructors to be excellent in delivering their service and ensure they do an incredible job before asking for payment hastily without anything impressively tangible.

She observed: “We are paying for your services here, and we expect nothing but the best value for our money. This facility is meant for wananchi who are looking forward to enjoying the fruits of their sacrifice and long wait.”

Echoing her sentiments, Mbatiany noted that some areas were still not well done and needed urgent attention from the constructor, failure to which their contract could be revoked.

“We are an action- and development-oriented administration that cannot withstand any substandard service; we shall be doing a weekly follow-up to ensure you’re working accordingly lest we seek another constructor,” cautioned Mbatiany.

Mt. Elgon remains exceptionally pivotal in Kenyan sports and athletics, having produced many track and field event heroes like Ben Jipcho, Levi Matebo, Mercy Moim, and Shem Kororia.

Chemoge HATC is one of the projects initiated between 2013 and 2017 under Governor Kenneth Lusaka’s first tenure but has since never been officially opened to the public despite visits from prominent sports officials, the most recent being Sport CS Ababu Namwamba.
