Joe Kadenge Stadium Construction Set to Restart, Assures Nairobi County Culture Chair

Nairobi County’s Culture and Social Services Chairman, Clarence Munga, has provided reassurance that the long-stalled construction of Joe Kadenge Stadium, formerly known as City Stadium, is poised to recommence.

Munga, who also serves as the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kabiro Ward, highlighted that the primary setback was the contractor not receiving payment, leading to their departure from the site.

“City Stadium was procured on time, but the major challenge has been payment. The county has now resolved this issue, and as a committee, we anticipate the contractor’s return to the site. Additionally, plans for the improvement of Worodly and Mwiki grounds have been included in our budget for this financial year,” affirmed Munga.

Despite numerous promises by past administrations to revitalize the facility, it has remained in a state of disrepair for years. Former Governors Evans Kidero, Michael Sonko, and Ann Kananu had pledged to refurbish the stadium but failed to deliver during their tenures.

Last week, during the groundbreaking ceremony for Talanta City Stadium, Nairobi Governor Sakaja disclosed that his administration had allocated 800 million for the renovation of Joe Kadenge Stadium, which serves as the home ground for the renowned Kenyan football club, Gor Mahia.

However, the county boss acknowledged that this amount falls short and appealed to the national government for an additional 800 million to bolster their budget for the project.
