Nairobi South MCA urges Female Governors to Prioritize Women’s Issues
By Mourice Seretta
Nairobi South Member Of County Assembly Esther Waithera Chege is now challenging Women Governors in the Country to ensure that women issues are well articulated in their respective counties.
Speaking on Thursday 7th March 2024 when Echo Network Africa in conjunction with Democracy Trust Fund organized a pre-International Women’s Day event in Nairobi, Honorable Chege said that it will be prudent for the Women Governors to first start implementing the Women agenda in their respective counties, before pushing male governors to do the same in their respective counties.
“If you look at how the County Assemblies have been performing, today I want to challenge all the women governors in the country to first start with their counties before asking the male county governors to do it.’ Honourable Chege said.
Honorable Chege who also happens to be the Chair of UDA Women MCAs in the country further says that Women Governors should also ensure that their county budgets reflect a good percentage of allocations that will go to women issues.
“If you look at the Nairobi County Budget, we have a Kshs40 billion budget. What percentage goes to women issues? We have not achieved even 3% of that.’ Honorable Chege posed.
She further asks Women Governors to also ensure that Women MCAs are incorporated in Critical Committees at the counties especially the Budget Committees so as to ensure that crucial matters as pertains to women issues get the attention they deserve.
She is also appealing to women to also attend more Public Participation forums in a bid to ensure their voice is heard.
