The government is expected to commission the long over due Dongo Kundu by pass.
Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Deputy Director Engineer Samuel Ogege has confirmed saying the by pass will be a game changer in road infrastructure once commissioned.
He added that the road infrastructure at the by pass is near completion with three long bridges as part of the project.
“The three long bridges have been completed and workers are currently on the final touches,” he clarified.
Ogege said at the end of next month the by pass project will be completed apart from painting.
He was speaking during a tree plaiting exercise at the Southern by pass in Mombasa county ahead of the commissioning of the project next month.
The KeNHA Deputy Director said the tree planting exercise aims at restoration of the environment to avert carbon gas cover.
Engineer Ogege who is in charge of the project said the tree plaiting aims to avert soil erosion against the cutting of trees in the area during the construction of the by pass.
“The completion of the project and the planting of trees will create a beautiful environment in the area,” he assured.
The KeNHA officer told the media the by pass will be a road infrastructure inter-connection and will ease traffic at the famous Likoni channel.
Ogege explained that on completion the by pass will reduce time wasted at the channel crossing and will be a shorter distance and it will be easier to connect with the south coast from the Mombasa Island compared to using the channel.
“You will spend less time using the by pass compared to using the channel,” he pointed out.
The KeNHA officer reiterated the by pass will connect the Mombasa island and the south coast mainland.
Ogege told the forum that tourists from Mombasa’s Moi international airport and from Nairobi won’t have to use the channel to the south coast as they can use the by pass.
Meanwhile, we have established that the Sh 24 billion project was scheduled to be opened in March but was delayed due disbursement of funds by Japan and Kenya governments and its aim is to boost business for both Mombasa and Kwale counties.
