Ship With 60,000 Metric Tons of Fertilizer Destined for Ethiopia Docks at Lamu Port

A ship carrying the largest consignment of bulk fertilizer destined for Ethiopia docked at the Lamu port in Lamu county over the weekend.

The MV Abby 11 made her maiden call at the Lamu port carrying 60,0000 metric tons of the fertilizer for Ethiopia.

Speaking during a brief ceremony Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto said the arrival of the consignment which is on transit is testament of many years of planning, dedication and hard work towards positioning Lamu port as a logistical hub in the region.

He pointed out that he has noted that the Lamu facility has capacity, manpower and resources to efficiently handle  largest vessels.

“The consignment shall be bagged in Lamu county and will be safely stored within the warehouses before being transported by road along the Lapsset transport corridor,” he disclosed.

The KPA MD said in his speech that as they celebrate the  momentous occasion they should look to the future with optimism and determination.

Captain Ruto pointed out that the county facility stands ready to further enhance  its capacity and capabilities.

He added that they will meet the growing demands of international trade and commerce together.

“We can continue to build a brighter future for our nation  and the region,” he further added.

The KPA boss acknowledged since the operationalization of the first berth in 2021 cargo volume through the facility has steadily grown.

Captain Ruto said a considerable number of vessels carrying various cargo including transshipment and livestock destined to local and international markets have docked at the port facility since then.

He pointed out  the authority has been working to ensure fully equipping of the Lamu port for efficient cargo handing.

Speaking at the same ceremony KPA board chairman Benjamin Tayari said the state corporation is collaborating with other stakeholders including the national government and partner government agencies to ensure the process of moving the cargo consignments all the way to the border is seamless and smooth.

He said the Board of  Directors is committed to ensure the management is effectively facilitated for the efficient and proper management of all port facilities.
