City Hall has opened six tender bids for staff medical cover valued at Kshs.1.5 billion, after a contract with Jubilee Insurance company expired on July 28, 2024.

In order to avert possible crisis, Nairobi City County Secretary and Head of Public Service, Patrick Analo has directed all the five county hospitals to offer free treatment to the 15, 000 county employees and their families, until a new medical cover is procured.

“This is to communicate that you are requested to put in place mechanism to ensure you treat our staff without charging them and their families, effective from 29th July, 2024”, Mr Analo stated in a memo to the County Executive Committee Member for Health Services, Ms Suzanna Silantoi.

The memo dated 29 July, 2024 has been circulated to the County Chief Officer Medical Services and Chief Executive Officers of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Mbagathi Hospital, Mutuini Hospital, Pumwani Maternity Hospital and Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital for action.

According to our impeccable sources at City Hall, The Times can reliably reveal that the companies which submitted their bids for the lucrative medical cover tender include:

* Madison insurance Kshs. 1, 751, 328, 808 bid with security of four million shillings.

The tender bids were opened at City Hall on Monday July 29, 2024.

The County Secretary’s letter says county employees will get free medical services in the county hospitals for 30 days from July 29, 2024 while the procurement process for a new staff medical cover is being finalized to replace one that expired on 28th July, 2024.

Commenting on the new development, a Kenya County Government Worker’s Union (KCGWU) senior official said although the contract expired on the midnight of 28th July, 2024, employees who are admitted will continue enjoying in-patient benefits for 30 more days.

However, the official criticized the county administration for starting the procurement process at the tail end of the previous contract.

City Hall is expected to pick the company that will provide medical cover for the county government employees, after an evaluation report is released by the tender committee.
