The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has called upon established and upcoming filmmakers to familiarize themselves and comply with the Film and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya which regulates the creation, broadcasting, distribution, possession, and exhibition of film and broadcast content.

While speaking at a stakeholders engagement forum dubbed: Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy (CAFIL) Program for creatives drawn from Kisumu Region and its environs, at the Tom Mboya Labour College, Kisumu County, on 16th September 2024, the KFCBs Acting Manager, Licensing Department, Mr. Marcos Masiga, said that complying with the established laws and regulations is key in spurring the growth of the film industry, as well as the larger Creative Economy.

During the forum, the stakeholders were sensitized about the KFCBs regulatory mandate (Film Registration, Classification, Licensing, and Compliance), as stipulated in the Films and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222, of the laws of Kenya.

Masiga reiterated the KFCBs commitment to creating a facilitative regulatory environment for the film industry to thrive in line with the Fifth Pillar of Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Through the CAFIL Program, Masiga stated that the KFCB is keen on working with industry stakeholders to create awareness on the existing regulatory frameworks that govern the film sector as part of the KFCBs support towards spurring the growth of the creative economy.

The CAFIL program which targets stakeholders in the creative industry will be implemented in Nakuru, Embu, and Mombasa, before being rolled out to other regions in Kenya.
