Environmental Activists Protest Report on Kenya’s Nuclear Programme
Activist said that released NCEA review noted shortcomings on the SESA report.
Center for Justice, Governance and Environmental Action [CJGEA] Executive Director Phyllis Omido has dismissed the Strategic Environment Social Assessment [SESA] report submitted by the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency [NuPEA] for the proposed nuclear programme for having scant information.
She reacted sharply on the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) letter requesting the Netherlands Commission for Environment Assessment (NCEA) to provide comment on the SESA report provided by NuPEA for the proposed nuclear power programme.
“We, alongside the Uyombo community and stakeholders and conservation groups, had the privilege to have participated in the process in line with the 2010 constitution,” she disclosed.
Phyllis argued they recognize public participation as of core value and one of the cornerstones of the constitution.
She had issued a press advisory on the report on Netherlands Commission for Environment Assessment [NCEA] on Kenya’s nuclear power programme.
The environmental activist said in her press advisory to media houses that released NCEA review noted shortcomings on the SESA report.
Phyllis who is also CJGEA Executive Director argued that the SESA process did not meet the international best practice of meaningful and effective stakeholders engagement and public participation.
She added that the SESA report is neither well structured nor coherent which affects readability.
“The SESA report is predominantly providing information on the nuclear power plant and provides scant information on the research, reactor and the uranium exploration plan,” Phyllis pointed out.
