Kenya’s candidate for the position of African Union Commission chairperson Raila Odinga said there is still life after the election to succeed outgoing chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.
He said the current chairperson’s tenure comes to an end early next year after serving his two terms.
“I don’t think his meeting with President William Ruto in Narok before Christmas day was a discussion about my bid,” he said.
Raila said the Head of State is currently chair of reform AU committee after taking over from Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame.
He was speaking during a talk show in a local television station in Nairobi.
The former Prime Minister sought to put the record straight that Moussa Faki Mahamat was not in the country to campaign for his candidature.
Raila told the forum that despite having a close relationship with him he is not behind his succession battle.
He said the current chairperson can’t come out openly to rally behind one of the three candidates to succeed him.
“The outgoing chairperson had appointed me the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development, a post which was created in October 2018,” he disclosed.
The Kenya candidate said the race has been reduced to a three horse race between him, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s former Foreign Minister and refuted claims he has ill feelings against his opponents.
Raila told the forum losing and winning are part of the game but winning will be good for the country adding that he is not worried about the outcome of the race.
