Coast Parliamentary Group (CPG) Secretary General Kassim Tandaza has condemned the killing of Mzee Issack Jaro Delo, a resident of Yakiicha village in Garsen Constituency, Tana River County.

Speaking in Mombasa, Tandaza said the elder was allegedly murdered by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel, a claim that has sparked outrage among local leaders.

“The elder was brutally murdered, and we condemn this incident in the strongest terms,” Tandaza said, describing the killing as unjustified. He made the remarks after leading CPG members to present a protest letter to KWS Senior Warden Vincent Ongwae at the KWS Coast Region Headquarters.

Tandaza, who is also the Matuga MP, criticized KWS for poor relations with local communities living near national parks, calling for improved cooperation. “Such actions are outdated in the 21st century,” he stated, urging KWS to address the situation immediately.

Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki also condemned allegations that Garsen MP Guyo Ali Wario was inciting his constituents over the killing. Faki defended Wario’s right to speak on the issue, saying, “The local MP is within his constitutional rights to comment on an incident affecting his area.”

MP Wario accused KWS personnel of attempting to conceal the body of the deceased to obscure the motive behind the killing. He cited a similar incident in 2018 where some KWS staff were arrested after an investigation.

“The family of the deceased is demanding justice, and this delay is unacceptable,” Wario said, adding that the killing has left the family orphaned. He dismissed claims of incitement, asserting his responsibility to advocate for his constituents.

Wario further criticized KWS for ignoring President William Ruto’s recent directive to address wildlife corridor issues in the region. “We demand the Director General of KWS to take responsibility and resign,” he said.

The incident has heightened tensions between KWS and local communities, with leaders calling for swift action to ensure accountability and justice for the bereaved family.
