On Tuesday, 13 May, 2025, Members of Parliament who had been locked out of their offices at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) due to unpaid rent were officially allowed back into their workspaces.
This follows the settlement of Ksh 50.7 million in rent arrears by the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), which confirmed that the outstanding dues for both the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 financial years had been fully cleared.
The impasse, which had disrupted parliamentary operations and caused legislators’ concerns, was resolved after weeks of negotiation and internal financial deliberations. Access to the KICC offices had been restricted, leading to inconvenience for several MPs whose offices are located within the facility.
In a statement released to the press, the PSC announced that a formal letter had been sent to the KICC management requesting the immediate restoration of access to the affected offices.
The commission expressed appreciation for the cooperation received from KICC management and emphasized its commitment to ensuring that MPs have uninterrupted access to working spaces.
Furthermore, the PSC revealed strategic plans to relocate all MPs from KICC to the Parliament Square offices by July 2025.
This move is part of a broader cost-cutting initiative to reduce recurrent rental expenses and consolidate parliamentary services within government-owned facilities.
The relocation to Parliament Square is expected to enhance efficiency and streamline service delivery by bringing parliamentary operations under one roof.
PSC reiterated its commitment to prudent financial management and ensuring that taxpayers’ resources are utilized effectively.
