Police officials in Kisumu County arrested five individuals in a quick and well-coordinated operation that they say is responsible for a series of violent robberies that have shook the city in recent weeks. Targeting a known hiding place close to the banks of the Auji River in the Daraja Mbili region, Manyatta ‘B’ Sub-Location, the arrests were made early on Monday, July 28, in response to a public tip.
The operation, led by officers from Kasagam Police Station, was part of a larger effort to combat a recent surge in criminal activities that have left residents gripped by fear. According to the police report, the suspects are linked to multiple cases of robbery with violence, particularly in Nyamasaria Estate, an area that has become a hotbed of insecurity.
During the raid, officers recovered crucial evidence including a Honda motorcycle believed to have been used during criminal escapades, three machetes, a knife, and a toy gun often used to intimidate victims. The suspects were immediately taken into custody and are currently being held at Kasagam Police Station, awaiting formal charges and arraignment in court.
The crackdown comes just days after a chilling attack on a Mediamax journalist who was brutally assaulted at his home in Nyamasaria. The journalist sustained severe knife wounds and head injuries after a gang of ten armed men stormed his residence at around 2 a.m. on Sunday, July 26. “These knife marks are from me trying to protect my head and chest,” he told reporters from his hospital bed at Aga Khan Hospital.
Police have praised the public for their cooperation, calling the raid a testament to what community policing can achieve. “The Service remains committed to providing effective, people-centric, and accountable policing services for a safe and prosperous society,” read a statement from the police.
As investigations continue, Kisumu residents remain hopeful that this arrest marks the beginning of a sustained effort to restore security and peace in the lakeside city.
