ODM Mourners in Bondo

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has issued a strong statement condemning Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for what it termed as “reckless, divisive, and shameful rhetoric” made during a public event in Kieni, where he appeared to mock the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement signed by ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, the party expressed “deep disappointment and outrage” at the governor’s remarks, accusing him of sowing division and disrespecting the memory of one of Kenya’s most iconic leaders.
“At a moment when millions of Kenyans across political, ethnic, and religious lines are still in deep mourning, Governor Kahiga chose to pour salt into the nation’s open wounds,” read the statement. “His words dishonor not only the memory of a statesman, but also the spirit of unity that Kenyans have demonstrated during this difficult period.”
ODM said Kahiga’s comments were in stark contradiction to the values that Raila Odinga championed — unity, inclusivity, and reconciliation — and urged leaders to rise above petty politics and inflammatory speech.
“H.E. Raila Odinga stood for national unity, inclusivity, reconciliation, and a Kenya that embraces all its children. These were the very values that informed the spirit and letter of the handshake between ODM and UDA,” the statement added.
Nassir emphasized that ODM would continue to honor Odinga’s legacy by upholding dignity, peace, and national cohesion. “At a time of collective grief, leaders must rise to the occasion, not drag the nation backwards,” he said.
The party called on leaders across the political divide to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace the path of nation-building, urging Kenyans to remain united in celebrating Odinga’s lifelong commitment to justice, democracy, and equality.
