A proud moment unfolded at Fort Lee, Virginia, on November 14, 2025, as Major Silvia Jemutai was officially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. The ceremony drew family and friends from across the U.S. and Kenya, all gathered to celebrate a milestone that the newly promoted officer described as both humbling and deeply personal.

Lieutenant Colonel Jemutai, who hails from Kopsiya, Poror in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, dedicated the achievement to her late mother, Jacqueline Alice Kirui. She said her mother’s strength and sacrifices shaped the path that ultimately led her to this moment.

“My mother was a trailblazer of our family, a woman of strength, vision, and courage,” she said. “She opened doors and opportunities I never could have imagined. Her sacrifices and her belief in me made this moment possible. Without her, none of this would be possible.”

Although her mother was not physically present, Jemutai said she felt her influence profoundly. “Her spirit lives within me. Every step of my journey has been guided by her example, and this silver oak leaf is dedicated to her and her sacrifices.”

The newly promoted officer also extended her gratitude to the many people who have walked alongside her throughout her military career. She thanked her family, friends, mentors, peers, and Soldiers for the unwavering support that has shaped her into the leader she is today.

In her remarks, Lieutenant Colonel Jemutai spoke about the weight of responsibility that comes with the rank. “This rank represents the Army’s confidence that I am ready to shoulder greater responsibility. To make difficult decisions, to uphold the Army Values, and to mentor the next generation of rising leaders,” she noted. “The next generation of leaders are the future of the Army, and I’m humbled to be part of that journey.”

As she steps into her new role, Jemutai pledged to lead with integrity and compassion, placing Soldiers and their families at the center of her mission. She emphasised her commitment to meeting the high standards expected of her, adding that each day is an opportunity to honour the trust placed in her.

From the quiet hills of Kopsiya Poror to commanding roles on the global stage, Lieutenant Colonel Silvia Jemutai’s journey stands as a testament to resilience, service, and the enduring power of a mother’s legacy.
