Political strategist and community leader Oketch Salah has come out strongly to defend his long-standing association with the late Raila Odinga, describing their relationship as one built on mutual respect, shared ideals, and a commitment to democratic progress in Kenya.
Speaking during a press briefing in Kisumu on Tuesday, Salah dismissed claims that his continued reference to Odinga’s political legacy was an attempt to gain personal mileage. He emphasized that his connection to the late opposition leader was rooted in mentorship and a shared vision for social justice, economic empowerment, and national unity.
“Raila Odinga was not just a political figure; he was a symbol of resilience and reform. Associating with his legacy is not opportunism—it is a continuation of the struggle for a better Kenya,” Salah stated.
The remarks come amid growing debate within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the broader political landscape about the future of Odinga’s political ideology following his passing. Some critics have accused younger leaders of exploiting Odinga’s name to consolidate influence, while others argue that preserving his legacy is essential to maintaining the party’s identity.
Sala, who worked closely with Odinga during several election campaigns, reiterated that his political philosophy remains anchored in the principles the late leader championed—transparency, inclusivity, and people-centered governance. He urged fellow leaders to focus on unity rather than division.
“Raila taught us that leadership is about service, not self-interest. Those of us who walked with him have a duty to uphold that spirit,” he added.
Political analysts note that Sala’s defense reflects a broader struggle within ODM to define its post-Odinga identity. As the party prepares for upcoming elections, figures like Sala are expected to play a key role in shaping its direction and ensuring continuity of Odinga’s reformist agenda.
