A group of Jubilee Party aspirants, led by Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni, has accused the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Fred Matiang’i, of failing to provide leadership in mobilisation and branding during Opposition rallies.
The aspirants allege that at joint Opposition events, only candidates from the DCP party are allowed to address the crowds, while Jubilee aspirants are sidelined and denied a platform to promote their campaigns.
Kioni, a former Jubilee Secretary General, described the situation as unacceptable and warned that frustrated aspirants might soon begin organising parallel rallies separate from those of the broader Opposition coalition.
“I was denied a chance to speak to the people of Ndaragwa, whom I have represented for over a decade. The microphone is always handed to Gachagua, who then invites DCP candidates instead of those from other parties,” Kioni said.
He added that despite growing discontent among Jubilee aspirants, especially in the Mt Kenya region, the party remains committed to the Opposition alliance.
Meanwhile, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu criticised Matiang’i for what he termed as neglect of the Jubilee Party, accusing him of failing to address Deputy Opposition Leader Rigathi Gachagua’s alleged bias against Jubilee members.
“Has Matiang’i abandoned Jubilee? That would explain his silence as Gachagua continues to welcome defectors from our party into DCP. At this rate, we might soon find that Matiang’i himself has crossed over,” Wambugu remarked.
Wambugu’s comments came after several former Jubilee legislators defected to DCP during Gachagua’s recent visit to the Mt Kenya region. Those who joined DCP include former MPs Kibinga Wathayu (Mwea), Munene Wambugu (Kirinyaga Central), Gichuki Mugambi (Othaya), Gichuhu Mwangi (Tetu), Anthony Kiai (Mukurweini), Peter Mwathi (Limuru), and Wainaina Jungle (Thika Town).
He accused Gachagua of systematically weakening Jubilee by recruiting its aspirants in Mt Kenya, warning that the party’s influence could diminish further unless Matiang’i takes decisive action.
