Siaya Governor James Orengo has said it would be a setback for Kenya if Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were to become president in the next general elections.

Speaking on Wednesday during a media interview, Orengo said that although Gachagua could be eligible to run for the presidency if cleared by the courts on his impeachment charges, his election would reflect poorly on the country’s political direction.

“It would be a big disappointment for the president of Kenya again to be elected in the context of what has happened previously. That is all about that one particular office, not what that office would do,” Orengo said, suggesting that Kenya should move beyond electing leaders based on personal circumstances rather than their leadership vision.

The Siaya governor, a senior ODM figure, noted that Gachagua had managed to tap into growing discontent in the Mt Kenya region, where many residents feel President William Ruto’s administration has failed to deliver on its promises.

“A lot of what he’s saying is within the context of his fight with President Ruto. He has brought an awakening, particularly in Central Kenya, about the false promises that President Ruto made. So we can’t really take him for granted. He’s saying a lot of things that only he can say,” Orengo explained.

Gachagua is positioning himself to run in 2027.
