Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the current congestion being experienced at the port will be addressed.
He said the government is out to accelerate the Dongo Kundu program within the port facility.
Chirchir announced that the construction of Dongo Kundu berth one is currently ogoing.
He was addressing journalists outside the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) headquarters in Mombasa county after holding a closed door session with port stakeholders and various government agencies.
“We will work on the identified areas to ensure the repeat of such a challenge does not occur,” he pointed out.
Chirchir said congestion at the port occurs when there are more vessels expected to dock than the capacity of the facility.
The Transport Cabinet Secretary said the government is also out to ensure electricity supply is connected and road infrastructure is completed including water supply.
Chirchir said the government is accelerating the development of the Lamu port and he encouraged the use of the Lamu facility.
He announced that two major shipping lines are currently using the Lamu’s facility’s berths to dock.
“Ships are waiting to dock at the facility,” he emphasized.
Transport Cabinet Secretary has raised a red flag saying that the current congestion challenge facing the port of Mombasa facility is expected to pull down the country on revenue collection.
Chirchir said this poses a danger for the government revenue target to run government programs.
