The late former Lugari MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo was on Saturday, remembered during a solemn requiem mass held at Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM), Valley Road, Nairobi, as family, friends and political leaders paid glowing tributes to his life and legacy.

The service drew a cross-section of leaders from across the political divide, reflecting Jirongo’s long and influential career in public service and business. Those in attendance included Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, several Cabinet secretaries, MPs, governors, clergy and close family members.

In emotional tributes, speakers described Jirongo as a bold, outspoken and resilient leader who left a mark on Kenya’s political and economic landscape.

“Cyrus Jirongo was fearless in his convictions. He spoke his mind and stood for what he believed in, even when it was unpopular,” said Mudavadi, noting that the former MP played a key role in shaping politics in Western Kenya.

Speaker Wetang’ula said Jirongo’s death was a major loss to the region and the country at large. “He was a man of courage and vision. Kenya has lost a leader who was never afraid to challenge power,” he said, urging leaders to honour Jirongo’s legacy by serving the public with integrity.

Former colleagues recalled Jirongo’s rise from humble beginnings to become a powerful figure in politics and business, inspiring many young people to pursue leadership and entrepreneurship.

Family members described him as a devoted father and mentor whose private generosity matched his public stature. “To us, he was not just a politician, but a loving father who always encouraged us to be strong and principled,” a family representative said.

Background to his death

Jirongo passed away earlier this week under circumstances that have sparked public interest and debate. Initial reports indicated that he collapsed at his Nairobi home, after which he was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have since said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death, as family and leaders called for restraint and patience as official processes take their course.

The death of the former MP has prompted an outpouring of condolences, particularly in Lugari and the wider Western region, where he was regarded as a political trailblazer and benefactor.

A towering political figure

Jirongo served as Lugari MP and later as a Cabinet minister, building a reputation as a charismatic mobiliser and sharp debater. Beyond politics, he was known for his business interests and for supporting community initiatives, especially education and youth empowerment.

As the service came to an end, clergy urged Kenyans to reflect on the fleeting nature of life and the importance of leaving behind a positive legacy.

Jirongo’s burial is expected to take place at his rural home, with details to be communicated by the family.
