Youth leaders want young people actively involved in national politics

A section of youths drawn from several political parties in the country are appealing to the youth across the country to be actively involved in the forthcoming general elections.

Under the auspice of National Youth Leaders, the youths led by Alex Matere and Antony Manyara of the Kenya University Students Union (KUSU) and the President of the East African Students’ Union, ask that all political parties must also ensure that they involve many youths as possible in party matters and also ensure they nominate many of them to articipate in the coming general elections.

The youth leaders also want the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure that they register as many youths as possible as voters.

‘We are disappointed that the electoral agency failed to register as many youths as possible as voters during the just ended mass voter registration exercise. We are appealing to the commission to ensure that they register many of the youths as possible in the coming voter registration exercise slated for January 2022.’ Said Matere.

He added that the electoral agncy should also look for a different approach and technique of ensuring the youths are registered as voters.

Matere who is the convener of the consortium also asked the registrar of persons to ensure that many youths are issued with national Identification cards so as to ensure they register as voters, remarks that were echoed by Manyara.

‘We also want the commission to see to it several youths including comrades are registered as voters.’ The vocal KUSU Presient Manyara said.

They further want the Registrar of Political Parties not to bar candidates who will fail in party nominations from contesting as independent candidates.

The youth leaders also want the National Youth Council to conduct free, fair and transparent elections during their forthcoming national elections.

Those present during the breakfast meeting at a Nairobi Hotel include Angela Mbuthia a director at National Youth Council, Anne Mwangi Mvurya formerly of UNSA, Evans Kimori a Nairobi Gubernatoria aspirant, Riziki Dunstan amongst others.
