Bungoma Youth WASH Parliament Call For Support From Leaders To Push Climate Change Agenda
By Isabella Maua
The Bungoma Youth WASH Parliament has challenged elected leaders and stakeholders to accentuate their support in matters of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in the quest to achieve equitable resource distribution in the county.
Speaking at Kimilili Sub County on Tuesday during their first physical meeting and elections to put representatives in office, the speaker elect, Isaac Wanjala, vowed to work closely with all stakeholders, from the wards to the national level.
“We are open to support and collaborations with our leaders, stakeholders, and other likeminded youths who would wish to work with us to achieve our dream of ensuring every household has access to adequate clean water in Bungoma County,” said Wanjala.
The over-20 climate change-enthusiastic youths also expressed their passion to protect water catchment areas and ensure water users and water resource management organizations are held accountable for their actions.
“We shall not relent in our pursuit to achieve our 2030 goal where every household should have access to water and toilet facilities to ensure zero tolerance for open defecation, which is still common in our region,” noted Isabella Maua, the deputy speaker elect.
She added, “We also call upon our leaders to support us in the fight against neglected tropical diseases, which are primarily caused by dirt and dust and can be avoided by providing adequate water to the locals.”
Ericson Ng’etich, who was elected as the clerk, divulged that the team has a broad spectrum since it will not only deal with water but also environmental matters and climate change across the region.
Conclusively, Mary Nasambu asserted that the youths will ensure they live up to the presidential directive on planting 15 billion trees by 2032 by making it all inclusive of vulnerable groups in society, including people living with disabilities.
Bungoma Youth WASH parliament is a community based organization consisting of passionate youths from all 45 wards in Bungoma County driven by need to ensure all residents access adequate clean water in the region.
