Babu Owino Warns Sakaja over Interference in World Bank Projects
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has warned Nairobi against any interference in World Bank projects earmarked for Nairobi.
The MP has warned against any plans to divert funds meant for the slum upgrading program,more so road projects.
Babu who spoke while addressing residents of Embakasi East said several roads are set be built across the City courtesy o the global financier.
In Embakasi East,the roads will be done around the Savanna, Embakasi wood and Soweto areas.
” I want to plead with the Governor not to eat this funds because this is a national government initiative only that we have to work with the county,” he said.
In January this year,the World Bank announced plans to ensure at least 400 slums and informal settlements in Nairobi are upgraded through a substantial funding of Sh31.7 billion from international donors.
This initiative, was designed to provide low-cost housing and enhancing infrastructure like roads, water and sanitation.
The World Bank pledged a contribution of $150 million, equivalent to approximately Sh24.1 billion while the French Development Agency promised an additional 43 million Euros, translating to about Sh7.6 billion.
A huge percentage of the funds were to be used in the slum upgrading program within Nairobi which was scheduled to receive an allocation of over Ksh 2.5 billion.
The upgrades were to be implemented under the aegis of the Second Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP2), a program conceived by the World Bank.
