Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday paid a courtesy call to Cabinet Secretary for Mining,Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs

The old time friends brainstormed and discussed on Kenya’s potential in Mining,Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs.

Sonko said the two had positive discussions on the economy and the political landscape of the country.

“Today, I had the privilege and honour of being hosted by my good friend HE Ali Hassan Joho, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs,”

“During our meeting, we engaged in discussions regarding issues of national significance as well as the economic and political landscape of the country,” he added

Sonko has for long shown interest in the maritime and blue economy and is optimistic Kenya can leverage on existing opportunities to create more jobs for youths.

” Kenya has the potential and capacity to be the continent’s attractive force in maritime and blue economy opportunities because of the available natural resources,”

Kenya is endowed with rich coastal and maritime resources, which have huge potential for development of the Blue Economy that has not been developed to full capacity. The maritime domain is the cornerstone of the livelihood of humanity, habitat, resources and transport routes for up to 90 per cent of global trade.

Kenya is one of the African countries that recognizes the blue economy as a new frontier for socio-economic development. The Blue Economy (BE) involves the development and management of coastal and marine resources in a sustainable way, providing opportunities for economic growth in sectors such as tourism, shipping, and fisheries, among others. The value of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region’s maritime sector assets is currently estimated at US$333.8 billion.

Due to this,Sonko believes Joho holds a strong and pivotal ministry that needs a lot of support from all relevant stakeholders to be successful.

” He is at the helm of what is become a strong economic frontier and we have to recommend policies and guidelines that can help and as a friend I will be willing to share some,” he said
