Harlequins edge out KCB over the weekend

Kenya Harlequins came from behind to beat Kenya Commercial Bank RFC 15-12 during the main cup of the 2024 Driftwoods Sevens Rugby 5th leg finals played at the Mombasa Sports Club in Mombasa county.

The national tournament circuit leaders forced the match to a 5-5 draw at half-time before the final whistle during the packed encounter of the 5th leg of the main cup in which 36 teams took part under the hot weather.

Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir presided over the awarding ceremony.

The circuit leaders managed to beat Blackbade 7-0 during the 5th leg of the encounter sponsored by sportspesa over the weekend.

The runners-up beat defending champs Kabras Sugar 15-0 who ended up in the fourth position at the end of the tournament.

Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has described the just ended Driftwoods Sevens Rugby 5th leg held at the port city as an amazing tournament.

He said the three-day tournament in which 36 teams took part has grown to national standards adding that he was impressed by the packed capacity crowd where the organizers could not go wrong.

“Driftwoods Sevens is one of the oldest tournaments in the country,” he pointed out.

Abdulswamad revealed the county government is in discussions with the Kenya Rugby Union to bring more tournaments to the coastal city.

He was addressing the media during the main cup finals between Kenya Harlequins and Kenya Commercial Bank RFC held over the weekend at Mombasa Sports Club in Mombasa county. Harlequins beat the bankers 15-12.

The county governor told the media he has plans to support sports within the county.

Abdulswamad added apart from liquor fees allocated to support sports activities the county government has plans to support basketball and Rugby among others.

Sportpesa public relations officer Mercy Kabui told the media the tournament enters its second year being sponsored by them.

She pointed out the weekend tournament has been competitive.

“We have plans to tap the talents during the tournaments and to nurture them for future sports activities,” she said.
