Kenya’s tourism sector is set for a significant boost following the unveiling of nine regional circuits under the Tembea Kenya initiative, aimed at expanding and diversifying the country’s tourism offerings. This strategic move, spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, focuses on showcasing lesser-known attractions to enhance both domestic and international tourism.

During the launch event in Kisumu County, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, highlighted the importance of these circuits in revitalizing the tourism industry. She explained that the new circuits are designed to align with current demands and emerging trends, offering a more holistic and immersive experience for travelers. The circuits will cater to various niches, including adventure, sports, culture, eco-tourism, and wellness tourism.

“These tourism circuits will take visitors on a journey through Kenya’s diverse attractions, offering unique reasons to visit every region. We encourage travelers to savor the diverse experiences available across the country,” said CS Miano.

She also announced plans for targeted marketing campaigns to popularize the circuits as part of the broader Tembea Kenya agenda, which remains the flagship program for promoting domestic tourism. Additionally, the Ministry will launch a photo contest, inviting Kenyans to showcase the best of their regions.

Kisumu County, part of the Western Tourism Circuit, played host to the Kenya Tourism Week celebrations, culminating in World Tourism Day. The weeklong festivities included visits to Ndeere Island, tree planting at Kajulu Hills, fashion shows, street art, and a hackathon championed by the youth.

Narok County Governor, Patrick Ole Ntutu, who serves as the Chair of the Council of Governors’ Tourism and Wildlife Committee, emphasized the need for increased government investment in tourism. He expressed his support for the marketing of the new circuits and reiterated his commitment to prioritizing tourism across all counties.

Governor Ntutu, who was the chief guest at the gala event, congratulated recipients of various tourism excellence awards, including the start-up company of the year, conservation champion of the year, travel content creator of the year, peace advocate, and community impact award. He also praised the youth for their active participation in tourism and conservation efforts.

Principal Secretary for Tourism, John Ololtuaa, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Ministry and counties to address gaps and enhance tourism growth across Kenya. He noted that the new circuits would help focus efforts to increase bed nights, longer stays, repeat visits, and overall visitor satisfaction.

Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO June Chepkemei assured that the KTB would actively market the circuits to showcase Kenya’s diverse attractions, driving inclusive growth and reinforcing Kenya’s status as a must-visit destination.

The nine circuits span all 47 counties and include the Nairobi Circuit, Central Kenya Circuit, Coastal Circuit, Northern Circuit, Western Circuit, Southern Circuit, North Rift Circuit, South Rift Circuit, and Eastern Circuit. Each circuit highlights iconic attractions within its region, supporting the Ministry’s efforts to diversify and enhance the visitor experience.
