Parents, clergy, and the media fraternity have been challenged to be advocates in fighting teenage pregnancies and gender-based violence in Bungoma County.

Speaking during Sub County Finals of the Wambilianga Super Cup tournament at Chesikaki, Bungoma Women Representative Catherine Wambilianga emphasised on responsible parenthood, calling upon parents to hold open talks with their children during these long holidays.

“We should not fear talking to our girls and boys about teenage pregnancies and their negative effects, especially on the lives of girls who are mostly forced to drop out of school and take care of their children,” said Wambilianga.

She also mentioned that not only is the Wambilianga tournament fighting GBV but also very keen on nurturing young talents of boys and girls across Bungoma County.

“As we mark the Sub County finals today at Mt. Elgon, I’d like to reveal that all along, we have had 450 teams take part in these sports, and we have Football Kenya Federation officials who have been spotting top talents,” she disclosed.

Mary Manyonge, head teacher at Chesikaki FYM Comprehensive School, lauded the noble action sponsored by the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, saying that boys and girls should enjoy equal opportunities for education and sports.

Wambilianga, on the other hand, urged the school head to allow the expectant candidates to do their national examinations regardless of their conditions.

She added: “Denying these girls a chance to find their future through education is far worse than the state they are presently in; so far, Webuye East has 46 expectant candidates and Webuye West 26; as we speak now, but they must be allowed to sit for their exams.”

Wambilianga took the opportunity to wish candidates success in their national examinations and announced the Mega Final Tournament, which will be held in November at Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma.
