National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority has been challenged to exploit new water sources such as underground aquifers in its mandate to fully harvest enough water.

Speaking during the launch of the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority’s (NWHSA) 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, Eric Mugaa, Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation emphasized water storage as the primary challenge facing Kenya, particularly in the water-scarce regions of North Eastern Kenya and Tana River counties.

Muga noted that water harvesting and storage must be prioritized to meet the country’s ever growing needs.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that the strategic plan outlines clear and measurable goals that must be achieved within the scope of available resources.

“This plan is our mission. It is achievable, but we must ensure that all objectives are met within the constraints of the strategy,” he stated.

He urged NWHSA to expedite the completion of stalled projects and focus on the development of water storage infrastructure, such as dams, to tackle the current water challenges.

He added that “It is crucial to expand ongoing projects and improve water storage capacity. We can learn from countries like Egypt, which have successfully mobilized resources for such initiatives.”

He further highlighted internal issues within the NWHSA, specifically organizational wrangles that have delayed progress. He assured that he is committed to guiding the authority through these challenges to ensure that it aligns with the government’s climate change and water management agendas.

“Water is essential to achieving the government’s agenda. Addressing the ongoing institutional challenges and focusing on solutions will fast-track the implementation of our projects,” he concluded.

The launch of the strategic plan marks a pivotal moment for the NWHSA as it seeks to implement key initiatives that will mitigate Kenya’s water storage crisis and ensure sustainable water management for future generations.

NWHSA is mandated to develop and manage water harvesting and storage facilities across Kenya to ensure sustainable water supply and address water scarcity in various regions. The Authority plays a key role in contributing to Kenya’s water security by developing strategic infrastructure like dams and water pans.
