CS Yatani’s 2021/22 Budget focuses on seven-point economic recovery strategy
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani has highlighted policy priorities for government aimed at fast-tracking resuscitation of economy amid turbulence brought about by the covid-19 pandemic.
While delivering his budget statement for 2021/2022 financial year, Yatani however disclosed that the implementation of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda remains critical to the economic recovery.
In this regard, the Treasury CS noted that the government will fast-track implementation of programmes and projects under the Big Four Agenda to enhance food and nutrition security, achieve universal healthcare, provide affordable housing and support growth of manufacturing sector for job creation.
To realize this objective, Yatani said the government will undertake strategic interventions, particularly aimed at achieving a resilient and sustainable economic recovery.
“First, maintain a micro-economic stability and enhance security to foster secure and conducive business environment and security of tenures and their properties.” He said
He said the government will further scale up development of critical infrastructure in the country, such as roads, rails, energy and water to reduce the cost of doing business and ease movement of people and goods as well as promote competitiveness.
“We will enhance investments in key economic sectors for growth based sustainable recovery by promoting agricultural transformation growth in manufacturing , environmental conservation and water supply, stimulating tourism recovery and sustainable land use and management.” He said
Fourth, expand access to quality social services in health eduvcation and appropriate social safety net for the vulnerable population.
Yatani said the government is also keen to support the youth, women and persons living with disability through government funded employment programs that leverages on partnerships with the private sector organizations.
What’s more, the CS reiterated the need to support county governments through transfer of shareable revenues to strengthen the systems and capacities in service delivery
Lastly, Yatani told lawmakers that the government will implement various policy, legal and institutional reforms to enhance efficiency of public service delivery.
