Kalonzo wants NASA pact of 2017 made public, says 2022 polls will not be postponed

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka now wants the agreement between ODM, ANC, Ford Kenya, Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) and Wiper that came together and formed National Super Alliance (NASA) in 2017 be made public.

Addressing delegates on Wednesday during the National Dialogue Conference on Electoral Justice in Kenya at a Nairobi Hotel, the former VP who was ODM’s Raila Odinga’s Presidential Running mate under NASA in the 2017 General Elections says the Office of Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to make public the agreement ahead of the 2022 General Election so as Kenyans can be privy to what it entailed.

Kalonzo said by the ORPP doing that, Kenyans will also be able to know who is lying about what it contained and make decisive decisions as the country heads to another General Election that will see the coming up of new political alliances.

‘That document is a public document. The Office of The Registrar of Political Parties needs to make it public as we head to the next general elections. You can not tell us that your hands are tied. Even if they are tied, do something,’ Kalonzo said.

Sources say the document indicates Odinga who was NASA’s Presidential flagbearer then had agreed that he was not going to be on the ballot come 2022, and Kalonzo’s remarks might be directed to him.

Kalonzo also rubbished claims by a section of leaders who have been saying that the 2022 polls will be postponed to allow for the passage of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill first.

‘Both the Senate and the National Assembly are only allowed to postpone a General Election if the country is at war. Next year’s polls must be held on the 9th of August, constitutionally.’ Kalonzo said.

He also challenged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to fully prepare for the polls as early as possible.

Kalonzo’s remarks were echoed by the country’s political Iron Lady, Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua who said the General Election will not be postponed just because of the push for BBI.

Karua offered that it was impossible for the country to have a referendum preceding a General Election adding that the only way was to have the BBI question together with the General Election on August 9th of 2022.

‘The changes we require do not need a constitutional amendment. We only need to change the management of the elections and not individuals or constitutional amendments,’ Karua offered.

She also challenged Kenyans to start trusting institutions.

‘Kenyans have fallen short of being trustworthy. We are in a messy situation and no one is going to clean it for us but us. Individual integrity becomes institutional integrity,’ She advised.

Deputy President William Ruto was represented by Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika while ODM Leader Raila Odinga was represented by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi.
