A young man accused of assaulting a traffic police officer on Marina Road in Kasarani Sub-county was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday. Ian Ngige Njoroge, 19, faces three counts, including robbery with violence. He appeared before Magistrate Ben Ekhubi and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) sought to detain Njoroge for three additional days to conduct further investigations, but this request was met with strong opposition from the defense. Led by lawyer Dancun Okach, the defense argued that the prosecution had not demonstrated that Njoroge was a flight risk or lacked a fixed residence.

Okach informed the court that Njoroge, a university student, was arrested at his parents’ home and posed no risk of fleeing. He also alleged that Njoroge had been assaulted and molested by police officers, suggesting that keeping him in their custody could result in further harm.

The primary charge against Njoroge alleges that on June 2, 2024, on Kamiti Road in Kasarani Sub-county, he, along with others not before the court, robbed Corporal Jacob Ogendo of a communication gadget battery and a Samsung Galaxy Note 1 mobile phone valued at Ksh 50,000. It is further alleged that during the robbery, they wounded Corporal Ogendo.

Magistrate Ekhubi directed that Njoroge be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for a medical examination and subsequently remanded at the Industrial Area Prison. The case will be mentioned tomorrow for a bond and bail hearing.
