Big Win as Governor Kananu Nominated to Senate
The flamboyant City politician and the incumbent Nairobi County Governor Ann Kananu has been nominated to the Senate by the ruling party, Jubilee.
More women are likely to increase the the one third gender rule in the 13th parliament as many parties have prioritize women on their nomination lists.
In the nomination list gazetted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday, July 27, the ruling party also nominated President Uhuru Kenyatta’s sister, Kristina Wambui Kenyatta, popularly known as Kristina Pratt, to the Senate.
Kananu’s dream to defend her seat was crashed following the return of Polycarp Igathe in April. Kananu took lead of Igathe’s campaign in Nairobi and popularized his candidature in less than a month.
Upon Igathe’s return to politics, he was picked as Jubilee’s Gubernatorial candidate and was later announced by Raila Odinga as Azimio La Umoja One coalition candidate for Nairobi.
Governor Kananu was sworn in January 2021 after being acting governor since the ouster of Mike Sonko in December 2020.
The ruling Jubilee party has submitted the names of Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu and former city Woman Representative Rachael Shebesh for nomination to the Senate.
