Technology firm Huawei has registered an improved global ranking as an employer of choice in the latest report by the Top Employer Institute, an international human resource research and certification organization.

With eleven of its offices across the African continent registering highly on the Institute’s radar, Huawei said in a statement that this milestone had contributed to its global ranking rising to 9 from last year’s position 11.

Huawei Southern Africa Human Resource Director Yu Chen announced that following a rigorous benchmarking and elevation program, the firm’s Mozambique and Tanzania offices had this year joined South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, Ghana, Botswana, Mauritius and Uganda to receive the Top Employer seal of approval from the Top Employer Institute.

“Being certified as a Top Employer showcases an organisation’s dedication to a better world of work and exhibits this through excellent HR policies and people practices and we are excited that the Top Employer Institute has awarded our various offices this prestigious recognition,” said Yu.

The Top Employers Institute programme certifies organisations based on the participation and results of their HR Best Practices Survey. This survey covers twenty HR practice areas including People Strategy, Work Environment, Talent Acquisition, Learning, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Wellbeing.

Yu attributed the firm’s steady rise in the global rankings to its adherence to modern employee skills and wellness by emphasizing on building ICT skills, which remain scarce across the region and building the physical and mental health of the whole staff complement. “We have also worked hard on diversity and inclusion, initiated programs aimed at fostering a more unified workplace and increased the proportion of local nationals in the senior executive appointments,” he noted adding that its industry leading skills transfer and training for interns and graduates have been recognized as a driver of the continent’s ICT Talent Ecosystem.

Top Employers Institute CEO David Plink said in the statement that, “Exceptional times bring out the best in people and organisations. We have witnessed this in our Top Employers Certification Programme this year: exceptional performance from the certified Top Employers 2023. These employers have always shown that they care for the development and well-being of their people. By doing so, they collectively enrich the world of work. We are proud to announce and celebrate this year’s group of leading people-oriented employers: the Top Employers 2023.”
