DP Gachagua to miss Mashujaa Day celebrations this weekend

Embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s fate is in limbo ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day national celebrations this weekend in the coast region.

Gachagua, who had declared he will not resign and vowed to fight to the end, lost the first hurdle after 281 lawmakers impeached him.

He had told a media briefing a day before he appeared at the National Assembly he was elected by 7.2 million Kenyan voters and the legislators have no threshold to impeach him.

As the days count down Gachagua’s last nail is in the hands of the senate which will be in session for two days before they vote on his fate takes.

All eyes are now focused on this coming Sunday when this year’s  Mashujaa Day national celebrations are held at Kwale stadium in Kwale county.

If the senate upholds the National Assembly’s decision it will be the end of  his political career similar to that of the late Dr Josephat Njuguna Karanja who served as the fifth Vice-President of the Republic of Kenya between 1988 and 1989 during the KANU regime under the late President Daniel arap Moi.

Moi had reportedly done this to spite Kibaki and the Kikuyu community of Nyeri.

Karanja resigned after being accused by the then late President Moi’s confidants of plotting to destabilise the presidency and abusing power.

According to speculations at the time, Dr Karanja was carving the plot in collaboration with his western allies, primarily from Britain and the US, where he had served as Kenya’s ambassador.

The late Karanja’s reign as VP was a perfect representation of early Kenyan politics
