The courts to handle disputes involving values less than one million Kenya shillings

Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya Justice Martha K. Koome has announced they will put up Small Claims Courts across the country.

She defended the Judiciary’s move saying the courts across the country will handle commercial disputes involving values of less than one million Kenya shillings.

“They are designed to resolve cases within 60 days and offer an efficient and cost-effective avenue for women entrepreneurs, especially those operating small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” she pointed out.

Koome urged women to take full advantage of these courts, as they offer a valuable tool for resolving disputes that can hinder business operations.

Her remarks were contained in a speech read on her behalf by Presiding Judge, Court of Appeal-Mombasa Lady Justice Agnes Murgor during the Mombasa women’s summit held at Jubilee hall in Mvita consistency, Mombasa county. The county women’s summit was organized by Mombasa Woman Representative Zamzam Mohamed.

The CJ said the small courts will offer an efficient and cost-effective avenue for women entrepreneurs, especially those operating small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

She said her move will ensure that women are able to thrive economically and continue contributing to the growth of their communities.

“However, as we celebrate the strides made, we must also reflect on the historical exclusion and marginalization of women in our society,” she pointed out.
