“We Want An Audit,” KMPDU Decry Fake SHA Payouts to Non-Existent Health Facilities

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has expressed fears of corruption in the disbursement of funds from the Social Health Authority (SHA) to private hospitals and is calling on the Ministry of Health to conduct an audit of all the hospitals that received the funds.

According to KMPDU Deputy Secretary General  Dennis Miskellah, this audit will help the government prevent the loss of funds through collusion between rogue SHA employees and hospitals as was witnessed under the scrapped NHIF.

“We want to know where these hospitals are located because we have information that people registered imaginary hospitals, and they are being paid by SHA. We want an audit of that hospital list,” the KMPDU Deputy SG said.

Last week, the Ministry of Health published a list of public, mission, and faith-based hospitals that received their two-month pay from December 3, 2024, to February 3, 2025, in a Ksh 11.4B payout.

Nairobi, Uasin Gishu, Kisii, Kiambu, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Wajir, Meru, Nakuru, Mandera, Migori, Kirinyaga, Bungoma, Mombasa, Kericho, Kakamega and Nyeri were listed as leading in SHA payments.

According to Principal Secretary for Medical Services Harry Kimtai, the  Ministry of Health will conduct a public audit of the facilities in the interest of transparency and to assure Kenyans no funds have been lost.

“If the public or oversight bodies feel that some hospitals are receiving more than they should, we will conduct further audits. We will follow up on any inconsistencies, track the exact number of patients served, and ensure accountability,” PS kimtai said.
