BCLB Suspends All Gambling Ads Nationwide for 30 Days Effective Immediately

The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has suspended all gambling advertisements across Kenyan media for 30 days, effective April 29, 2025. The ban affects TV, radio, print, digital, and outdoor platforms.
In a statement, BCLB said the move aims to protect vulnerable groups especially youth from the harmful effects of aggressive betting promotions.
“This suspension will allow us to review current advertising practices and enforce responsible marketing,” said BCLB Chairperson Sarah Wamaitha.
“Of particular concern is the rampant airing of gambling advertisements during the watershed period (5:00 am to 10:00 pm), thereby exposing vulnerable members of the population, particularly minors, who are gradually drawn into gambling-related addiction,” she stated.
She noted that the directive applies to all licensed gambling operators and include television and radio advertisements, social media platforms, print media (newspapers, magazines, flyers) and outdoor advertising (billboards, branded transport).
She indicated that it also includes SMS, email campaigns, and push notifications and celebrity endorsements and influencer marketing.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with consumer advocates praising it as timely, while media and betting industry players warn of revenue losses. The board has warned of penalties for non-compliance and hinted at tougher regulations ahead.
